Eyelid Lift

blepharoplasty, eyelid liftBlepharoplasty, also referred to as eyelid lift, eyelid tuck or eyelid surgery, is a safe, effective and common procedure that allows the surgeon to reshape the upper and lower eyelids. By removing excess fat, skin and atrophied muscles, the eyelid can be reshaped to get rid of bags under the eyes and the excess skin of the upper eyelid which very often obstructs good vision as we age.

An eyelid lift performed by Abramson Facial Plastic Surgery & Rejuvenation Center can restore a more youthful appearance, along with a more awake look, all the while eliminating a tired or angry look.

Blepharoplasty surgery can be performed by Dr. Abramson on all four eyelids, or just the upper or lower lids. Your eyelid lift/tuck can be performed alone, or along with a facelift or other facial procedure for a better outcome and more complete satisfaction.

Eyelid Lift Surgery Preparation Tips

To prepare for blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift surgery, Dr. Abramson will ask that you eat a healthy diet and refrain from smoking. He will also recommend you avoid medications that contain ibuprofen or aspirin, and discuss with him any other medications you may take.

You may not eat or drink after midnight the night before your surgery. On the day of your procedure, you shouldn’t wear makeup or contact lenses. Someone should be available to drive you to and from your procedure, as well as to help you during your recovery.

Eyelid Lift/Eyelid Tuck Procedure Overview

Whether having an eyelid lift or an eyelid tuck, your blepharoplasty surgery will go as follows:

  • You will be draped and the eyelid area will be thoroughly cleaned with an antiseptic solution.
  • You will be anesthetized, and then your surgeon will make incisions inside the eyelid that are not visible from the outside. These incisions will be in natural fold lines for upper eye or along the lash line for lower eye surgery.
  • Through these incisions, the skin will be separated from the underlying fatty tissue, and excess fat, muscle and loose skin will be removed.
  • If necessary, very fine sutures will be used to close the incisions.
  • Your eyes will be lubricated with an ointment and may be bandaged.

What to Expect After an Eyelid Lift

After an Abramson Facial Plastic Surgery & Rejuvenation Center eyelid surgery, you can expect some swelling and bruising, along with a “sticky, dry, itchy” eye feeling for a few days. Cold compresses help with swelling, along with keeping the head elevated when lying down. Oral pain medication will be prescribed for any discomfort not controlled by these methods.

You will need to stay in bed the first day with your head elevated. Bandages are normally removed the next day after surgery. You may be given a stocking cap to wear for a week or two, and you will need to clean the eye area per your surgeon’s instructions.

Most patients are able to return to work or school within 4-7 days, but you must continue to take it easy to allow for healing. You must also avoid rigorous activity for 2-3 weeks following your surgery.
