As we age, we all experience the effects of gravity and age related changes. Stress, wear and tear and lifestyles also contribute to the unwanted changes we see in our faces such as deep creases, lines, wrinkles, folds and fat deposits. Men and women in their forties and older, commonly decide to “turn back the clock” by having a facelift. This involves removing excess fat and skin, tightening relaxed muscles, and re-draping the skin over the face and neck. A facelift can be done alone – or along with other facial procedures such as forehead lift, eyelid surgery and nose reshaping. The results give you a more youthful appearance –smoother, tighter skin while removing the unwanted lines, wrinkles and folds!
PREPARATION FOR FACELIFT SURGERY:
- Eat a nutrient rich diet to help your body heal and recover faster.
- If you smoke-please refrain for 2 weeks before and several weeks after surgery.
- Avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen products.
- Discuss all medications, vitamins and herbals with your surgeon.
- Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery.
- Do not wear makeup or contact lenses to surgery.
- Have someone drive you the day of surgery and plan to stay with you a day or two to help you.
FACELIFT SURGERY OVERVIEW:
- You will be draped, your face thoroughly cleansed with antiseptic solution, and you will be anesthetized.
- “Hyperangulated” incisions will be made in the hairline and all work is performed through these incisions. (This is Dr. Abramson’s unique technique – which prevents the hair shaft from being destroyed so normal hair growth resumes after surgery.
- The skin is then separated from the underlying fat and muscle, membranes are tightened and excess skin is pulled back and removed.
- Sutures secure the layers of tissue and close the incisions.
- The surgery usually takes several hours – depending on the extensiveness and number of procedures performed.
- Your face will be bandaged – and bandages are removed 1-2 days after surgery.
- Stitches are removed in 1-3 weeks.
- You may shower and wash your hair after bandage removal.
- Oral pain medication will be prescribed to control any pain or discomfort you may experience.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER YOUR FACELIFT SURGERY:
You should be up and about in 1-2 days but you will need to take it easy for at least one week after surgery. You will need to be gentle with your face and hair since you will be tender.
Also, avoid strenuous activities for 2 weeks, get plenty of rest and eat a nutritious diet. You should be able to return to work within 10-14 days after your energy returns and swelling and bruising have decreased. Camouflage makeup can be worn to cover bruising. We recommend Jane Iredale cosmetic mineral makeup which actually aids in healing while providing effective coverage.
The swelling, numbness and bruising are normal and does go away over a few weeks. Healing is gradual – and the visible results will appear over time – be patient!
