OTOPLASTY (corrective ear surgery)
For children and adults – ears that are unusually shaped – too large – protruding or deformed, Otoplasty reshapes not only the ear, but the self-image.
Corrective ear surgery, commonly referred to as Otoplasty, Ear Reshaping and Ear Pinning, is a safe, common procedure to correct the deformities that were inherited at birth or caused by trauma. The type of procedure used is dictated by the anatomical deformity such as “lop-ear” or “cup-ear” or an auricle that is larger than desired. Some women need to have an ear lobe repaired that has been torn by an earring. Whatever the cause or correction needed, using the most advanced techniques combined with years of experience – we achieve excellent results!
PREPARATION FOR OTOPLASTY – Corrective Ear Surgery:
- Eat a nutrient rich diet to help your body heal and recover faster.
- If you smoke-please refrain for 2 weeks before and several weeks after surgery.
- Avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen products.
- Discuss all medications, vitamins and herbals with your surgeon.
- Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery.
- Do not wear makeup or contact lenses to surgery.
- Have someone drive you the day of surgery and plan to stay with you a day or two to help you.
PROCEDURE – OTOPLASTY – Corrective Ear Surgery:
- You will be draped, the surgical area will be thoroughly cleansed with antiseptic solution, and you will be anesthetized.
- Small incisions are made in appropriate locations (depending on the correction being done) – usually in the back of the ear.
- Excess cartilage is sculpted or removed to allow repositioning of the ear if needed. Excess skin may be removed in some cases.
- Repositioning and reshaping is skillfully done.
- Sutures are used to close incisions – and light bandages are applied.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER OTOPLASTY SURGERY: You will be up and about in 1-2 days and can shower and shampoo your hair after bandages are removed – usually 1-2 days also. Oral pain medication will be prescribed to control any discomfort which is usually very minimal. Stitches are removed in 1-3 weeks and you should be able to return to work in about 2 weeks. Even though you’ll be up and about right away, you’ll need to take it easy and limit activity for 2 weeks.
