Eyelid Lift Plastic Surgery
Abramson Facial Plastic Surgery Center, Atlanta GA

Each year 100,000 men and women choose to have eyelid surgery to restore better vision functionally or simply for cosmetic reasons.

Blepharoplasty, also referred to as eyelid lift, eyelid tuck or eyelid surgery is a safe, effective, common procedure that allows the surgeon to “reshape” the upper and lower eyelids. By removing excess fat, skin and atrophied muscles, the eyelid can be reshaped which gets rid of those “bags” under the eyes and, the excess skin of the upper eyelid which very often obstructs good vision as we age. These corrections can restore a “more youthful appearance” along with a “more awake” look while removing that “tired or angry” look. By getting rid of this “excess baggage”…so to speak…you will look and feel better. Blepharoplasty surgery can be performed on all four (4) eyelids, or just the upper or lower lids…whichever you and your surgeon decide. Your eyelid lift/tuck can also be performed alone or along with a facelift or other facial procedure for a better outcome and more complete satisfaction.

PREPARATON FOR BLEPHAROPLASTY (Eyelid Lift) SURGERY:

  • Eat a nutrient rich diet to help you body heal and recover faster.
  • If you smoke-please refrain for 2 weeks before and several weeks after surgery.
  • Avoid taking aspirin and ibuprofen products.
  • Discuss all medications, vitamins and herbal with your surgeon.
  • Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery.
  • Do not wear makeup or contact lenses to surgery.
  • Have someone drive you the day of surgery and plan to stay with you a couple days to help you.

PROCEDURE – BLEPHAROPLASTY SURGERY: (Eyelid Lift/Eyelid Tuck)

  1. You will be draped and the surgical area thoroughly cleaned with an antiseptic solution.
  2. You will be anesthetized then your surgeon will make incisions inside the eyelid- not visible from the outside – in natural fold lines for upper eye – along the lash line for lower eye surgery.
  3. Through these incisions, the skin is separated from the underlying fatty tissue and excess fat, muscle and loose skin are removed.
  4. If necessary – very fine sutures are used to close the incisions.
  5. Your eyes are lubricated with an ointment and may be bandaged.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER BLEPHAROPLASTY – EYELID SURGERY: Some swelling and bruising is normal along with a “sticky, dry, itchy” eye feeling for a few days. Cold compresses help with swelling along with keeping the head elevated when lying down. Oral pain medication will be prescribed for any discomfort not controlled by these methods. You will need to stay in bed the first day with your head elevated. Bandages are normally removed the next day after surgery. You may be given a stocking cap to wear for a week or two and – you will need to clean the eye area per your surgeons instructions.

Most patients are able to return to work or school within 4-7 days…but you must continue to take it easy to allow for healing. You must also avoid rigorous activity for 2-3 weeks following your surgery.

With today’s amazing modern techniques, innovativeness and “state-of-the-art” instruments, facial plastic surgery is safer and more effective with fewer risks than ever before.
