Does it work?
YES! There are a number of lasers capable of producing long term hair removal. There are differences in effectiveness based on the specific wavelength and power of the laser used. Results of the most effective lasers show 80% to 90% of treated patients lose 90% of their unwanted hair.
How Does It Work?
Laser hair removal works through selective photothermolysis (using light to cause destruction through heating). Very specific wavelengths of light are used to penetrate the skin without causing skin damage. Melanin in the hair follicle absorbs the laser light. This causes very brief, high temperatures in the hair follicle but not in the surrounding skin. The high temperature in the hair follicle damages the structures responsible for hair growth. This is different than electrolysis in that it is entirely non-invasive (does not break the skin) and uses light instead of electricity to heat the follicle. It is also not necessary to treat individual hairs as the laser covers a dime size area with each pulse.
Does it hurt?
NO! Laser hair removal is gentle and does not require anesthesia. Our laser is even gentler than most because of its dynamic cooling system. A cool mist is sprayed onto the skin just prior to each laser pulse. This temporarily diminishes sensation so that most patients feel only the brief puff of the coolness and experience no discomfort at all.
Is it Safe?
YES! Thousands of patients have undergone laser hair removal with a very low incidence of complications. Used properly by trained professionals, it is extremely safe. Our lasers are even safer than most because of the active cooling system, which protects the skin during treatment.
Why do you need multiple treatments?
The laser is primarily effective on hairs in the active growth phase. Only some of your hair is in the active growth (anagen) phase at a time. It is necessary to repeat the treatment over time and treat the follicles when they are susceptible. All of the hair will fall out with the very first treatment over the next approximated 4 weeks. Different areas of the body have different growth cycles but usually it is necessary to do 5 to 6 treatments at 4-6 week intervals. Typically only a percentage of hair will be effectively treated with each treatment.
What if my results are temporary?
90% of patients get very good long-term results. 30% of patients experience a prolonged delay of re-growth lasting one to three months. For these people, continued laser hair removal at periodic intervals may be a very good option. Our treatment programs are designed so that follow ups if needed, are available at an affordable and reduced cost. Even prolonged temporary results are likely to be preferable to other means of hair removal.
What about side effects?
Laser has far fewer side effects than electrolysis or even waxing. This treatment has virtually eliminated inflammation, ingrown hairs, allergic reactions and pain associated with other methods. A few people experience temporary pigment changes after laser treatment (2-8%). We can minimize these temporary changes by not treating recently tanned skin. A mild sunburn effect occurs in 5-15% of patients. This resolves within a couple of days and requires no special treatment. There is no recovery time; normal activities can be resumed immediately.
How much does it cost?
There is no charge for consultation. Price will vary depending on the amount of hair and body area to be treated. Individual consultation is necessary to determine the exact cost. Long term results usually make laser a very cost-effective treatment. Plan on a series of treatments for optimum results.
